Top Ten Tuesday: Top of the Spring TBR

Tuesday, March 12, 2013

So, Top Ten Tuesday is again brought to you by the brains over at The Broke and the Bookish. What a marvelous thing this link up is! Lists! Books! Book lists! Sigh, it's just a wonderful way to think about all things bookish in your life.

And this week? This week we're being asked to list the Top Ten Books on our TBR List. As in, those books that you know you need to read but somehow they keep their prized spot as the Top of the TBR. One of my best friends, Katie/Tonks, is going to consider this list as being my "Oh my word Courtney/Bean! These are the books I've been telling you to read for AGES!" list.

And you know what? I have a feeling a lot of you will agree with her.

So, let's get this list of books I should have read ages ago over with:

1. The Casual Vacancy - J.K. Rowling - I guess part of me still thinks that maybe I still need a little bit of time to come to terms with the fact that Harry Potter is over. And that this book? In no way mentions or touches on anything Harry Potter for that matter. And that it's an adult book. I just miss Hogwarts.

2. A Wise Man's Fear - Patrick Rothfuss - This is a case of my classic But-if-I-finish-this-book-I-will-have-to-wait-forever-for-the-next-one-to-come-out-and-what-if-it's-a-cliffhanger syndrome. It's self diagnosed. So it could also be a case of I-don't-want-to-not-be-able-to-read-this-book-for-the-first-time-again syndrome. Either way, that's why I've been putting this one off forever.

3. Looking for Alaska - John Green - I have no logical excise to make for not reading this one (or any John Green, for that matter) yet. So, I'm not going to try to come up with one. Know I'll be reading this soon.

4. A Game of Thrones - George R.R. Martin - Another epic fantasy series to add to my list? Sigh. It has to happen. And I really want to watch the TV show. And since I'm one of those people. You know what I'm talking about. I can't watch till I've read the book. So, there's my incentive. Oh, and it's on my TBR Challenge for 2013.

5. Atonement - Ian McEwan - I put this one in the middle of my list so maybe no one would notice it. Moving on...

6. To Kill A Mockingbird - Harper Lee - I was never assigned this as a child. And I need to read it. No, I want to read it. So, I'm gonna make that happen this year. Because, really? I have no good reason why to keep putting it off.

7. The Dharma Bums - Jack Kerouac - My favorite professor in college recommended this to me. He waxed on about all the reasons why I, in particular, would love it. And reading this book is one of those connections I still have to him (and to Carolina in a way). I know reading it would only give me something new to email him about, but reading it seems kind of final. Like the closing of the last page of the book would somehow symbolically close a chapter in my life.

8. The Pillars of the Earth - Ken Follett - Not having read this yet makes me feel like the worst History Student in the world. Seriously. I have a MA in this stuff! It's high time I finally read this. And it's also on my TBR list, so there's extra incentive.

9. The Last Dragonslayer - Jasper Fforde - I love all things Jasper Fforde. And Fforde writing a YA book about dragons? It just seems too good to be true. And it's a series. But the second book is only available in the UK right now. And I have horrible patience.

10. The Fellowship of the Ring - J.R.R. Tolkien - I know it's going to be a hard book to get into, as much as I know I'm going to love it, so I just keep putting it off. It's gonna get done though. I've hit the point that I want to read it, so, Tolkien has that going for him.

How about you? What's on your Spring TBR list? What can you not believe you've put off for so long?

  6. Thanks for the comment, Chelsea!
You have a lot of books on your list that I have heard a lot about, but not actually gotten around to finishing or reading (especially John Green, whose books I can't seem to be enthusiastic about, and A Game of Thrones, the size of which just petrifies me). I'm looking forward to your reviews to see how you like them! The Fellowship is really good, so long as you keep in mind that Tolkien is big - and by big I mean huge - on descriptions of absolutely everything. The upside of this is that you get a pretty clear picture of Middle Earth, but the downside is that it takes forever to read.

  7. Yes, To Kill a Mockingbird needs to be compulsory for all peoples. Then you must watch the movie. I have read it several times (and in sophomore English)and love it every time. One of the best movie adaptations, ever.

As for The Last Dragonslayer...I own almost all Jasper Fforde books, and Thursday Next is one of my fav series...this one did not blow me away. Sad.

I am waiting for Looking for Alaska from the library. I did read The Fault in Our Stars. It was fabulous.

Thanks for stopping by my blog! Top Ten

  9. You should really read John Green's books as soon as you can! I ordered Looking for Alaska and Will Grayson, Will Grayson as soon as I finished The Fault in Our Stars last month. And The Fellowship of the Ring is amazing, even though I felt a bit weird reading it for some reason... I tried reading The Casual Vacancy, but it wasn't really my cup of tea >_< Hope you like it, though!

  10. Hope all of these books live up to the hype for you. Looks like you are in for some great spring reading! I was late to the John Green party and I'm still trying to make up for lost time :)

  11. I'm also still trying to come to grips that Harry Potter is over! I need to read Looking for Alaska too. And I think you will like To Kill a Mockingbird. I read it in high school, but it was one of the few books I actually liked that I had to read for school.

    Happy Spring Reading :)

  12. That reminds me that I have to read The Casual Vacancy too. Oddly enough, I have it on my shelf right now! I also would like to read Looking for Alaska after reading The Fault in Our Stars. Happy reading. :)

  13. Oh, I need to read The Last Dragonslayer as well! I meant to get to it months ago...

    Great list!

  14. I've had The Casual Vacancy on my Nook for ages now, and somehow I can't bring myself to read it. Maybe it's because Jo hasn't announced another book yet, and I want to extend her writing/Harry Potter legacy alive for as long as possible, lol. Ooh, and I highly, highly recommend Atonement. Emotionally draining, but worth it. A Song of Ice and Fire is a gripping series too! Great choices :)

Thanks for dropping by my blog today! Happy reading!

  15. I definitely want to read Looking for Alaska too! I haven't read any John Green. Yeah, the game was heartbreaking, but oh well. :( We got it next year!

    Thanks for stopping by!
