Top Ten Tuesdays: I Hoard Books

Tuesday, March 19, 2013

Oh, The Broke and the Bookish! Why must you do this to me!

Have you seen my TBR list?!

This week's topic (Top 10 Books I HAD To Buy...That Are Still On My To-Read Shelf) is inhumane! It's not fair! It's not nice! This requires me to reveal myself as and admit to my status as a Top-Notch & First-Class Book Hoarder.

Basically? I have no idea of how I am going to narrow this list down to ten.

Also, I have no idea how to stop making a lot of my Top Ten lists so repetitive.

Oh wait, I do.

I need to actually get to reading some of these books.

1. Bitterblue (Graceling Realm #3) - Kristin Cashore - I have a few major idiosyncratic book-reading habits. Let's start this list off with the first: I have a serious problem wherein I hate seeing a series come to a close. I will put off the last book for so long that I have to go back and Wikipedia or Goodreads the books to sort out plot points that I had forgotten. I just don't want to see a series that I adore to end. To be gone forever. Because, yes, I can come back and reread them. But I can never read them for the first time again. And I just love the world Cashore has created and the characters that she has developed. I will be sad to see them go.

2. The Casual Vacancy - J.K. Rowling - I've said it over and over again with this book: I just need to read it in my own time. When I've fully accepted that it won't be Harry Potter. Because, I can tell myself that fact over and over again, but until I accept it, this book will never be great for me. Or maybe I just need to suck it up and read it. Either way. I bought this book full price at a small, local bookstore. However, it is JKR, and therefore I clearly had to buy it... MONTHS ago.

3. The Wise Man's Fear (The Kingkiller Chronicle #2) - Patrick Rothfuss - This is my second idiosyncratic book-reading habit. I hate when I put down a book I love and realize it is going to be quite a long time until the next book in the series is released. I know that it is going to be forever before Rothfuss releases book #3 in this series. FOREVER. It took him SEVEN years to release #2 after he published #1! He's stated so on numerous occasions. So, once I read this book it will be a long, long, long time until I can buy #3 and then treat it the same way as I expressed about my earlier mentioned idiosyncratic book-reading habit.

4. Code Name Verity - Elizabeth Wein - ALL OF YOU GUYS TOLD ME TO READ/BUY/INGEST THIS BOOK. And now, idiosyncratic book-reading habit #3 rears its' ugly head. I need to distance myself a tiny bit from all the uproar about a book before I can read it. Otherwise I fell like I set the book up against unattainable standards. I want a book to stand out to me on its' own merits, and not what I've been told. (However, I am so so so excited for this book)

5. The Name of the Rose - Umberto Eco - Admitting to this still being on my TBR Shelf is incredibly embarrassing since I am a medieval historian. And every medieval historian and their siblings, parents, offspring, and cats have read this book. I have no reason for not having read it yet. So...

6. Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Coast Trail  - Cheryl Strayed - When I got done hiking in the White Mountains this past summer all I wanted to do was read all about hiking and go hiking and talk about hiking and....well, you get the point. I would love to thru-hike the PCT or the AT or any other awesome adventure. This book? It's going to give me that hiking itch hard-core and I'm not sure my wallet can handle that...

7. Looking For Alaska - John Greene - I have no witty or logical reason for this one. It's John Green. I know everyone and their step-sister has raved about this book and everything ever written by its' author. And I still haven't picked it up. All I can say is that, I will read it eventually.

8. Pathfinder (Pathfinder #1) - Orson Scott Card - I love everything I've read by OSC. And this is OSC for YA and that must mean it will be incredibly amazing. Right? I haven't heard anything about this book, however. Which makes me wonder/worry/fret. Someone! Quick! Give me a reason to read this one soon!

9. Atonement - Ian McEwen - I told you last week: I have no logical reason that I haven't read this book yet. And I'm really hoping you won't notice it on my list (again).

10. All Quiet on the Western Front  - Erich Maria Remarque - There are a lot of Classics on my TBR list. I feel like a book becomes a classic for a reason, and therefore need to/ought to be read by ensuing generations. Because there has to be a message in it that can be/should be heard by everyone, no matter their time. And this book is the foundation for a movie of the same name that my Dad (among many, many others) consider to be the movie that everyone, everywhere should see. A picture of war that is so harrowing that everyone should understand.

There are so, so, so many more books that could/ought to be on this list. Ten? That was a hard number to narrow it down into. But, in closing, this is me when I walk into a bookstore:

  1. I think I missed the post that explains what TBR means? Either way I just checked out your TBR list and it is seriously impressive- ps I am also a book horder. I've read a handful of the ones you listed but you've given me a lot of books to add to my list. I just finished To Kill A Mockingbird and it's hard to pick up just any other book after that one.

  2. Omg-- My list for this category would be SO long. But don't rush to read Atonement-- I hated it.

  3. LOL - At least you now know you're not alone in your book-hoarding :) That's the best part about this week's topic.

I've only read two from your list. I loved CODE NAME VERITY because it's just unique and even though I'm only a fair weather OSC fan, I actually really liked PATHFINDER. Good luck with all that reading!

  4. I too am a book hoarder and my top ten keeps changing as I add more to the TBR pile.
I thought that I was the only person with compulsion for books, alas! I'm not alone.

    1. It's so nice to know we're not alone in this, isn't it? :)

Picking JUST TEN was SO HARD!

  5. Bitterblue is a brilliant novel, by far the best in the series. Also The Casual Vacancy is really good once you get into it. Happy Reading!

  7. Bahahaha! Fry is the best! I also need to read Bitterblue, Code Name Verity, and The Casual Vacancy. (Why do I feel like I might be encountering some pitchfork-wielding book lovers after typing that statement?) And I agree with Ashley G's comment above me; I read Looking for Alaska and found it to be a wee bit lacking.

Yeah. Those pitchforks are really gonna come after me now.

(Thanks for visiting my TTT list, btw!<3)

  8. Atonement is the only one on your list I have read! I expected this book to be a really fantastic read and was left a little disappointed to be honest. I enjoyed the second half the book much better so keep on reading if you get stuck yourself :D
