TTT: You Haven't Read WHAT?!

Tuesday, April 16, 2013

This week The Broke and the Bookish are letting us rewind a little and visit a TTT Topic we may have missed in the past. Because, well, there have been a lot of topics over the weeks, and sometimes you either a) skip a week here and there or b) come late to the party and realize with a sad face what you might have missed. Yep, I'm in category B over here.

So, what topic did I decide to revisit? The Top Ten Books I Can't Believe I Haven't Read Yet.

Also known as the books that prompt the response: "What do you MEAN you haven't read X yet?! How did you get out of High School without reading that one?! So, when do you plan on getting around to it?!"

So, really, this list? It's full of the books that I'm always ashamed to admit that I haven't read yet. When people start talking about them I do my very hardest to not admit to that fact without trying to play along like I've read them (because I am not a liar, I may try to redirect conversations away from people realizing my secret, but I am not a liar!).

Maybe making this list public will shame me into reading these!

1. Number the Stars by Lois Lowry - This is probably the book I get the most grief over having not read yet. And you know? I have no honest reason as to why I haven't read it yet either. I know it will be an amazing book once I get to it, but until then? I don't know. Maybe part of me feels like I might have reached the point where I won't enjoy it/get as much out of it as I would have if I had read it when I was at its target age? Someone help me out here...

2. Lord of the Flies by William Golding - I feel like everyone either loves this book or references it all the time. I do think I might have liked it a little more had I read it when I was at the age of the kids on the island (I mean, kids running the place? Younger Courtney would have loved that!), but I think I will still like it when I get around to it. I have purchased it, so it's getting closer to read.

3. All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque - My dad (among many other reputable sources) says that the movie made off of this book is something everyone should watch in order to get a clear picture of just how much of a hell war is. I know this is going to be a hard book to read, but I think I owe it to myself and to everyone who has ever fought .

4. The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood - Everyone who knows me even a little tells me that I will simply fall in love with this book. What else does one really need in order to pick up a book? Because usually "this is a good book" does it for me, but a personalized recommendation? I don't know, I just need to read this one.

5. Little Women by Louisa May Alcott - Don't look at me like that. There may be a whole bunch of internets between us, but I can sense that glare...

6. Animal Farm by George Orwell - Clearly I didn't read enough classics in Middle/High School or College. This is another one that I know I will be peeved at myself for not reading sooner, but hopefully 20something Courtney will appreciate it more than Younger Courtney would have.

7. The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco - Anyone who studies or even kinda likes Medieval History has read (and adored) this book. I must be the only Medieval Historian on the planet to have not read this (or anything else by Eco) yet. Bad Courtney!

8. A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens - Or, really, any Dickens other than A Christmas Carol. I think this book, with it's infinitely quoted opening line, is something I ought to have read by now. I just need to get my hands on a copy and read it. It's really as simple as that, isn't it?

9. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy - J.R.R. Tolkien - I will get through the first book in this series this year if it kills me. I know I will enjoy it. I know it will become a fast favorite. I have no idea what's holding me back.

10. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams - Everyone who's Anyone has read and loved this book. I think I might even own it already! I know I will enjoy this book (and maybe even further into the series!) so, I'm really not sure why I haven't buried my nose in it yet!

Please note that To Kill A Mockingbird has disappeared from needing to be on this list. I finally read it! And loved it! And have no idea what took me so long! Take that TBR books!

What about you guys out there? What books are you ashamed

  1. Yep. I'm with you. The only one of those that I've read is Lord of the Flies. I was never big on required reading, but for some reason I got into that book. I chose the same theme for my Top Ten Tuesday this week.

  2. Number the Stars is great-- although I had forgotten that book completely until I saw it on this list! But All Quiet on the Western Front and Animal Farm don't need to be read. I've never read Little Women either-- I've started it more than once but haven't been able to get through it.

  3. The Handmaid's Tale is so good! You should read it! I've also wanted to read Little Women for a long while and I haven't read Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy either! OOps :( Happy Reading!
