Thirty Seems Pretty Sweet

Wednesday, August 26, 2015

Today I turn thirty years old, which frankly, isn't as frightening as it sounds.

I've spent a lot of time lately thinking about this next decade.
Thinking about all the amazing people I've met on this journey so far.
And on who I am today because of all of those people.
All of you people.

So, thank you from the bottom of my heart for being you.
And allowing that youness of you to shape the meness of me.
I honestly wouldn't be who I am, or where I am, today without you.

So, here I'll leave you with some bits of wisdom I've accumulated over the years.
There were a million more I thought of after
(like "drink those 8 glasses of water 'they' recommend"
or, "find a reason to laugh every single day, no matter how hard it may seem")
but these are a good bunch to reflect on today.

And also, my parents deserve the biggest shout out,
and I LOVE YOU,
that there ever was on the internet ever.

Because?
Well, I really wouldn't be the woman I am today without them.
At all.

So, thanks Mom and Dad.
For everything.

Happy Birthday Daddy!

I love my father as the stars -
he's a bright shining example
and a happy twinkling in my heart.
- Terri Guillemets

Happy Birthday to the most amazing man I have ever known! Your dedication and passion in life for all that you do and the kindness and love you always show to those around you have made me into the person I am today. I can only hope to follow in your footsteps as I go down this path of my life.

Happy Birthday to the man who has always stood behind me in all the tough (and easy) decisions I've ever made in my life. Thank you for never doubting me or second guessing me - but for always being a sounding board and a gentle hand of guidance in the right direction when I wasn't so sure I was going the right way.

Happy Birthday to the man who has taught me to love and be proud of the country in which I was born and raised. Your years of service in the Air Force as well as the years you've worked in the NICU have shown me what true dedication and service looks like. I am proud of many things in my life, but there are not many things I'm more proud of than being your daughter.

Happy Birthday to a man with a sense of humor I totally get and probably take after (along with mom's as well, that's for sure!). Thanks for teaching me it's (almost) always okay to randomly stick your arm into holes in hundreds of years old ruins. Especially when there's a silly picture to be taken.

Happy Birthday to a man with a sense of adventure - even though it's taken us a while, I cannot wait to go on many, many more fun and exciting trips with you and mom! I am so glad that I studied abroad in Italy (and that you and mom let me!) for so many reasons, but one of the biggest reasons is that it got you and mom bit by the travel bug! I cannot imagine our lives without our recent adventures/vacations! From North Carolina to Rome to Paris to Budapest to Prague to Poland to Vienna - we've been a lot of places in this world so far! The world is our open book - where to next?

Happy Birthday to the #1 man in my life since the day I was born. You've never left my side and have loved me and helped me through every scraped knee, ear infection, broken heart, rejection letter, rejection anything-else, disappointment, and let-down. And thank you for always being there to rejoice and cheer me on through every fencing win, soccer/t-ball/softball game, academic success, silly role in a play, endless (and seemingly pointless) field hockey games, and every other bit of happy that has ever filled my life. I am so blessed to have you as my father. And even better, I'm so blessed to have had you and mom there to love and raise me every day of my life.

Happy Birthday Daddy! Here's to many, many more together!

He didn't tell me how to live;
he lived, and he let me watch him do it.

Happy Birthday, MOM!

Sunday, October 23, 2011

Today is a very important day!

It's my mom's birthday!

My mom is amazing!
She's my travel buddy,
my sounding board,
my [sometimes] Devil's advocate,
and so many other things.

But most importantly,
she's my best friend!
I LOVE YOU MOM!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

26 Lessons For 26 Years

Friday, August 26, 2011

Today I'm turning 26 - it's not as exciting a number as 25, but it's still a big deal to me. I love birthdays. I love that you get a whole day about you. Not for the presents or the attention. I could do without those on most days. But mainly because people you love - and often haven't talked to in a long while - call, stop by, email, whatever. Birthdays bring people together. And for that, I'm grateful.

Last year I posted 25 things I had learned over the course of my 25 years.

Today you're getting 26 more life lessons I've gathered over the years.

1. Take Risks - What's the point of living your life constantly surrounded by a safety net? You get one chance at this life. One chance to see all that you can see, do all that you can do. Can you do that without a risk or two?
2. Keep a Journal - Looking back over all the good (and not-so-good) times reminds you where you've come from. It shows you how you got to today. And knowing your past - appreciating it for all it's worth - is the key to growing and moving forwards.
3. Own a Pet - There is just something about the love of an animal that changes you. Everyone should experience that unconditional love, and try to emulate it.
4. Always Kiss/Hug Goodbye - You never know if it's the last time you'll see someone, make sure they know how important to you they are. (note: this isn't necessarily only considered on a morbid note. Rather, it comes from my leaving Budapest for the 'last' time. I left plenty of friends behind who I don't know if/when I will ever see again. But it's also about the morbid side of things too. I'm SO thankful that I got to kiss my great aunt goodbye a final time. That's something that she and I will have forever.)
5. Build Snowforts & Snowmen - Enjoy every moment of childishness you can. It keeps you young. Playing in the snow is FUN. Yeah, it's a pain and makes driving a pain, but it's fun and beautiful and should be enjoyed.
6. Unplug - We spend so much time plugged into something (computer, phone, television, etc). The world really does exist outside of the electric. Which is funny, writing on a blog on the internet about how much better the real world is ;) But really, life took over this summer - I got off the internet and ENJOYED it. Turn it off, see people, see the world.
7. Don't Text At The Table - This is directly tied to the previous one, but I think it merits being highlighted on it's own. If you're out to dinner or eating in, you're at that table to be with the people that you're with. Actually engage in that moment - listen, talk, laugh, whatever. But be there, in that moment, and enjoy life.
8. Cook - Sure, going out to dinner is fun. But what's more fun for you (and your wallet) is having people over for a meal. Flex your culinary prowess and show off what you can do in the kitchen. Nothing brings people together like a meal in your home.
9. Smile Even When You Don't Have a Reason - You DO have a reason. You're alive. If you're in a bad mood, a blah mood, or no mood - a simple smile can change everything around.
10. Don't Be Friends With People On Facebook You Aren't Friends With In Real Life - Do you really want them knowing everything that you post there? Staying 'friends' with people to stalk their ups and downs isn't that great - 'cause they get to do the same with you.
11. Send Your Kids To Summer Camp - Though I don't have kids, working as a counselor has taught me just how important those experiences are to kids. Send them somewhere that they have to unplug and live outside for a week. It will change them in ways you will never understand (and they will change their counselor's lives in ways they/you/the counselors will never understand).
12. Go Outside - Camp. Hike. Swim in the Ocean. Swim in a lake. Stargaze. Whatever. Enjoy the nature that surrounds you for all that it's worth. This planet? This Earth? It's quite the amazing place when you take a few minutes or days to just soak it all in.
13. Do Something Every Once & A While Just For You - Pedicures. A movie by yourself. Reading a book in a cafe. Anything. Treat yourself to some 'me time' and enjoy your own company.
14. Call Mom & Dad Daily (If Possible) - They're the most important people in your life. The ones that will love you NO MATTER WHAT. So many kids these days think they're too cool for their parents, or too busy. You're not. You are who you are and where you are because of them. You love them, they love you.
15. Read (& Find A Book That Changes Your Life) - There are so many worlds out there (fiction & non; fantasy & non; etc) that can change your perception of the world you live in. So many books have moved me, shaped me, changed me. Some have (literally) saved my friends lives. And some stay with you forever (The Phantom Tollbooth). But you have to open a book to find them.
16. Don't Text & Drive - It's stupid and pointless and dangerous. Both to you and anyone else on the road that you're driving on. Whatever it is you want to say CANNOT be more important than your life, or any other life that's within your proximity.
17. Don't Buy 'Stuff' - If you're on vacation, a photograph is the best memory you can have. There are certain things that you want/should buy when traveling (Sweater in Ireland, Glass in Venice, etc), but if you think it will end up in a drawer or closet, don't waste your money. The same philosophy can be used when contemplating almost ANY purchase.
18. Don't Keep Stuff - If it's important, keep it. If it's not, toss it/sell it/donate it/etc it. Clutter is clutter. You don't need it.
19. Have Hobbies - Otherwise you sit around bored. We were made to DO things. So find the ones that you enjoy, and do them.
20. Stick Up For What You Believe In (But Listen, Too) - You have your own beliefs and dreams and opinions and ideas. Share them. Debate them. It's only when we compare and discuss ours with others that the world can grow; that we can grow. Our evolution as humans depends on this.
21. Follow Your Dreams - Don't give up on things because you think you can't do them. You only can't do them if you let yourself stop trying or give them up. We are capable of so much, if we only try.
22. Pay The Toll For The Car Behind You - Or, try to do a good deed every once and a while, just because. Doing something nice and unexpected for a complete stranger may just be the thing that changes their (or your) life.
23. Take Your Vitamins - Seriously. It's good for you. Just do it :)
24. Support Your Troops - You don't have to support the war if you don't want to. But support the people who are already over there, risking their lives and happiness and futures, so that you can have yours. Take a second every now and then and just think about what that means.
25. Love Your Friends - They're the family you get to chose. Appreciate them, never take them for granted.
26. Be YOU - Dr. Seuss had it completely right: "Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You." Embrace it, enjoy it. Don't try to change it or adapt it for anyone other than You.

Is It Summertime Yet?

Tuesday, March 22, 2011

I know I thought last summer was my last chance at spending all day, every day outside in the clean air and sunshine. I signed on to work at a summer camp in the middle-of-nowhere New Hampshire thinking it was a one summer only sort of deal.

That seems to be not quite the case!

I'm going back to camp this summer and I CANNOT wait.

Here's a little taste of why:

A few facts about me at summer camp:

- my name is "Bean" (From Ender's Shadow)
- i rock as many *Nsync & BSB tshirts as possible
- i get sad when i shower because it means i am washing off my tan
- taking a trip to Dunkies is the highlight of some days
- i dont have a use for airconditioning
- i windsurf at least once a week
- i get cranky campers up at 5am for sunrise canoes
- the most important daily decisions include what colors to put in a friendship bracelet (and what pattern to try out)
- i sing crazy songs at the top of my lungs before every meal
- i get to spend all day, every day with some of the craziest, most awesome people ever
AND
- i get to make a difference in a lot of kids lives - the last day of a session when i get a hug and a little girl says "Beans! I'm going to miss you SO much! You're the best counselor EVER! here have my favorite sillyband!" is the best thing to ever happen to me. every. single. time.

Oh. And I missed my "blogaversary!"
Happy 2 years of blogging to me!

Happy Birthday Mom!

Happy Birthday Mommy!

She's quite possibly the most wonderful, amazing, and kind-hearted people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing.

I am lucky to have you as my mother! I cannot imagine what my life would be like without you - thank you for going on so many amazing adventures with me. Thank you for offering advice when I asked for it (and even when I didn't think to or want to!) and for being there with a kind word or a hug when I made my own mistakes despite your advice.

I LOVE YOU!!!!

XOXOX

PS. I am so jealous that you get to go see Jeff Dunham (.com) tonight. Bring me back something to laugh at that will make my sides ache. HAVE FUN!

On Turning 25

Wednesday, August 25, 2010

I am slowly approaching the quarter-of-a-century mark, in four minutes it will be my birthday.

Technically I won't be 25 for a few more hours, so in theory I can enjoy 24 a little longer. However, I'm not afraid of this birthday. I'm nowhere near lamenting my youth (heck! it's not even close to being over!). I am loving my mid-twenties.

In general, life is good.

So here, on this anniversary of my debut into the world, I give you 25 things I've learned in 25 years:

1) Share your crayons; even your favorite sparkly pink one. Even though only children get the bad rep of being princesses who don't know how to share things with others, I learned early on that sharing is the easiest way to make friends. Learn this one early, apply it to the rest of your life.
2) Always follow your heart, but let your head have room to speak as well. I think the advice to follow your heart is pretty reliable, however I think my amendment is well needed. Your heart will never look out against your favor, but it's nice to have your brain there to say "woah, maybe you don't really need to..."
3) Always say please & thank you. Politeness is way underrated in today's society. Kind words and thoughtful actions will get you far.
4) Don't stick with things and/or people because they're comfortable. Once things get comfortable we forget to evaluate them. You don't want to let go because they used to be amazing, used to make you smile, used to, used to, used to... That old sweater with holes in the armpits and stains on the sleeves? Toss it. The boyfriend who forgets your birthday and never compliments you anymore? Toss is. Never settle for anything less than what you deserve.
5) Send cards and real letters. Real mail is an amazing thing. Just pulling an envelope out of your mailbox that doesn't contain a bill makes you feel like you won the lottery. Knowing someone picked out that card just for you, or sat down to pen you a letter updating you on life and saying hello? That's priceless.
6) Brush your teeth twice a day (at least). Dentists suck. Dentist bills suck. It takes 6 minutes out of your day total, and the rewards for it are endless. No bad breath, no unnecessary invasions of your mouth by your dentist.
7) Take as many pictures as you can. For me, photographs are worth so much more than any trinket I can buy in a place. A shot glass with my name on it from Paris? Will probably break in a few years or get lost or covered in dust (or both). The amazing pictures I took at Notre Dame and the Eiffel Tower? Mine forever, ready to be printed out, framed and hung on my wall for everyone to ooh! and aah! over.
8) Tell the people you love that you love them. This world is a funny place, people come and go. Accidents happen. Telling someone that they mean the world to you, may mean the world to them.
9) Never go to bed angry. Not only does it make it hard to fall asleep, or your dreams less than pleasant, it's just not worth it. I've always been this way. If mom or dad and I got in a fight I couldn't go to sleep, I'd write them notes telling them I loved them and that I was sorry (even when I knew I was in the right! I would cave and make up, just so to not go to bed angry).
10) Listen when people are talking to you. How often we zone out when in the middle of a conversation! How much time we spend thinking about what we're going to say next! Stop it! Listen to what the person you're talking to has to say.
11) Use your turn signal. No, really. Please use it.
12) Read at least 25 books a year. Reading is like taking a journey with friends you never knew you could have with whom you can go on amazing adventures with. There are millions of amazing stories - some true, some not - out there to explore. Get your face out of your TV screen and into a book.
13) Work with kids at least once. Working at camp this summer reminded me of what being 13 was like. Okay, it reminded me of the good things at 13 (and not the pimply faced boys and middle school drama), but still. Children are the most intense little people there are. Their ideas are wonderful and they're still so full of optimism and wonder with the world. We could all only dream of welcoming a bit of that wide-eyed life into our worlds.
14) Travel. Preferably when you're younger - without obligations or time constraints - but, if that's not an option do it when you can. There's a massive amount of world out there to see, if you stay huddled up in your little corner of it you're missing out on so much. Traveling allows you to open your eyes, see new places, meet new people; it gives you the perspective that while there's a lot of world, it's still pretty small.
15) Wear sunscreen. I'm not trying to copy that old graduation song here. This one is serious! I've turned into a lobster so many summers it's no longer funny. Sunburns are serious business. Wear your sunscreen.
16) You're never too old to make new best friends. Some of the most amazing people I know have come into my life in the last 4 years. If I had closed the doors to new people mid-way through college I would be lost right now. I've started to believe that people have a role to play in the stories of our lives. Some are meant to come early and stay for the whole show, while some only get cameo appearances. It's the mark they make on your life that is what counts, and both are equally as important.
17) Put your family first. They are truly the only people in the world that will love you no matter what is going on in your life. Where friends may dessert you, your family will always be there with a hug or a phone call. Love your mother and your father every day the same way you loved them when you were three and they were your whole world - because they still are your whole world.
18) Leave gossip to the gossip magazines. Heard from someone that someone else called you a name and said hateful things about you? Don't start calling them names or cry because they may have said that - call them and ask them for yourself. Chances are there was a miscommunication along the line and either they never said it, or the reason they said it was something you didn't realized you did. Either way, you can remedy the problem, or cut off ties with that person with full knowledge of the situation.
19) New & Improved is not necessarily better. I remember when I was little Crest made the most amazing toothpaste - it tasted amazing and looked like it had glitter in it. I loved brushing my teeth. Then it became "new & improved" and it tasted horrible. And I had to settle for regular, boring, sparkleless toothpaste. Sometimes new does not mean better.
20) Volunteer. It's a humbling experience. Doing something for no return or reciprocation is one of the greatest acts we can do for another. Your time is the most precious gift you have, give it away to things that need it most.
21) Sleep with your stuffed animals/blankets as long as you want to. I don't care, there is no age where it is too old to cuddle up at night with that security item. My pink cat (Pink Kitty) and blanket have been through EVERYTHING with me in my past 25 years, why should they get the shaft now?
22) Never be afraid to do the things which scare you most. Or the things that people look at you with that look in their eye of but you're 24, shouldn't you be settling down by now? Getting a job? Getting married? No, I want to go to Budapest and get my MA degree, thankyouverrymuch. If we spend our whole lives living according to what other people think of us and our dreams, whose life are we really living? I've worked hard to shape my life into my life and I am quite enjoying it that way.
23) Let people put their two cents in. Seems a little contradictory to @22, no? Well, it's not. Letting people give you their advice is a good practice to keep. What is important is what you do with it. You have to let the bad, inhibiting advice roll off your back and out of your mind. But within all that negative advice (which usually just stems from jealousy, mind you. People tell you to not move overseas for school because, well, they really wished they had the kahones to do it themselves, but don't; so why should you get all the fun?), there are some pieces that you can take and shape so that they help you along the way.
24) Always have an extra $50 stashed away, just in case. It's a smart practice. You never know when you'll be in a tight spot. The hard part comes in making sure you know that it's onlyforemergencies; and that those new stellar shoes do not constitute an emergency.
25) Love. Everyone. Everything. Don't be afraid to give of yourself so that you can get that love in return. So much of our lives are spent in hate. All that negative energy floats around us like heavy rain clouds. We need to get out of that fog, get away from all that hate and learn that loving is so much easier.

There are so, so, so many more. Maybe you'll get some more when I hit 26, but for now it's time for bed. Gotta get some sleep before the festivities begin tomorrow!

Happy Birthday to me!

Quarter Life Crisis

Monday, August 23, 2010

I turn 25 this week and am in need of a good quarter life crisis.

Anyone have any good ideas?

I'm thinking going to GradSchool in Budapest wasn't enough for this girl.

There's plenty of time for settling down-ing, and job-ing, and live-ing in my future. What shall I do with my youth? I mean, there's more GradSchool to be done later on, but what about now?

I'm thinking WorldTeach may be my solution, maybe in the American Samoas?

So They Say It's Your Birthday

Tuesday, March 16, 2010

So, I was seeing SO many of you having blogoversaries over the past month and I thought I'd look and see when mine was. Boy was I in for a surprise!!

I MISSED MINE!

Well, I missed it by about 5 days. Still, I missed it. I'm such a bad blog-mother.

When I started this blog I just wanted a place to bitch rant about life, whine about small things that no one else would listen to, and basically just a secondary public-ish journal. I wrote when I felt like it and didn't feel bad for not posting more than once a month. Heck, I had life going on and things to do. Plus, no one was reading it, so I only let myself down by not posting. I was on my hunt for post-bacc programs for med school, believed I would be at my job for another year until I was accepted into said post-bacc, and volunteering at the UNC Hospitals.

Life was good. Life was fun. Life was easy.

Life was in for a big change.

I got accepted into grad school. In. Budapest. I moved out of my lovely home of the past six year and crammed all of my worldly belongings into a UHaul and then back into my parent's house. And then I crossed that giant pond. I originally started this blog so that all my friends and family could gorge themselves on my adventures and be super jealous of live vicariously through me. I didn't know then that I'd have 40+ followers, let alone be sharing a trip/grad school adventure in Budapest with all of you! I I'm so glad I am though! You guys are the best. Seriously, your comments make me so happy!

So in honor of my belated birthday I'm going to host a little giveaway. Just cause you guys are so awesome. Give me a few days to find something suitable and I'll have another post about it. It's going to be mailed out when I get back to the States, so I've got a little bit of time (eep! 18 days until going home! eep! sooo much work to do.....!)
